How to play the game

There are 5 games available:

Pairs The game will present the player with 2 historical events. All that is required is for the player to state which happened first.
Dates The game will present the player with a historical event and a selection of dates. The player must select the correct one.
Sort-3 The game will present the player with 3 historical events. The player must select the correct chronological order in which the events happened.
Pinpoint The game will present the player with an historical event and an empty Timeline. The player must move the blue dot on the Timeline (using the cursor, a finger or the right/left keys) to select the date of the event. Pressing 'Submit' will reveal the answer and the points won or lost, allocated according to how close the guess was.
Sequence The game will present the player with 2 historical events, a fixed one and a moveable one. Using the cursor, a finger, up and down buttons or keys, the moveable event can be placed either above or below the fixed one (above if it's earlier and below if it's later). Pressing 'Submit' will check the answer and update the score accordingly. If correct, a new moveable event will be displayed ready to be chronologically positioned. The points available to win increases for each event correctly positioned. Up to 8 events will be displayed (depending on the level of difficulty) to complete the game. Alternatively the player can 'Bank' any accumulated points at any time and start a new game.

Each game can be played at 1 of 4 levels of difficulty:

Easy
Medium
Hard
Expert

The difficulty of the challenge is gauged by the relative obscurity of the event(s) and the period of history in which they took place. The points available reflect the difficulty and will be added to the player's total if answered correctly and subtracted if answered incorrectly. A points bonus can be won on some games for 5 consecutive correct answers.

It is also possible to filter the events to be selected by Category. The Categories are by historical period, geographic region and subject matter.

Random This option will select at random, one of the games (Pairs, Dates, Sort-3 and Pinpoint) at your chosen difficulty level.

Daily Challenge This option will present you with 6 randomly chosen questions across the games and difficulty levels. It can only be played once a day and the questions will be the same for all players on that day.

All events are added to the player's personal ‘Timeline’. This ‘Timeline’ will be available for the player to view in a linear representation, allowing them to traverse their collection of events. By default, only the last 25 events selected by the game will be seen, but more can be shown.

The player's total score, the Daily Challenge score (if played that day) and points scored in the last 30 days, will be shown on the leaderboard along with the other players. No personal information will be shown on the leaderboard.

If the user wants to learn more about an event they will be able to click on 'Learn more..' and the event details will be automatically loaded into a search engine.

Each Sunday, players are sent an email (unless they have opted out) listing historical events that happened in the coming week. It is also possible to view a Timeline of events that happened 'Today' back in history.
